Welcome

Whether you are a current ASPP member, a potential member, or have bumped into our website as you research psychoanalysis or analytic training, we hope that you will pause and spend some time getting to know us!

The Adelphi Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (ASPP) is a volunteer organization founded in 1980 by graduates of Adelphi University's Postdoctoral (now Postgraduate) Training Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.

ASPP is the professional, scientific, educational, and social association for graduates, faculty, supervisors, and candidates of the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology Postgraduate Training Programs at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. Click here for more information.

ASPP endeavors to create a means for graduates of all the Postgraduate Training Programs to have a life-long, ongoing relationship with our analytic community.

We also welcome others who share our interests and mission to become a part of ASPP.

Why Cowboy Boots?

Our society is a part of the legacy and dream that Dr. Gordon F. Derner left at Adelphi University. In 1950, he founded its professional doctoral training program in Clinical Psychology. It was the first school of professional psychology within a university. After Derner's death in 1983, the program became the Gordon F. Derner Institute for the Advanced Study of Professional Psychology and, later, the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology.

Derner was known as an eclectic character. Even though he was an esteemed professor and head of a successful academic program, he often wore the cowboy boots, string ties, and Native American turquoise jewelry he had discovered while working for a traveling circus. These items remain, to this day, a part of the sartorial culture of our department.

We have incorporated cowboy boots into the ASPP logo in honor of both Gordon Derner's exuberant spirit and professional accomplishments. Our hope is that ASPP will continue to nurture these qualities within our community.

On February 28, 2021, a group of ASPP Past Presidents met with the new ASPP officers to offer advice and share stories about their ASPP presidencies. Many hadn't seen each other in years, and all had great fun catching up and reminiscing.
