The authors hope that Engaging the Self: Theory and its Applications in Psychoanalysis will be the first in a series of annual volumes published to showcase the scholarship of the faculty of the Postgraduate Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at the Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. All of the papers endorse the view that psychoanalysis creates the conditions for authentic dialogue and that self-understanding necessitates an engaged other, such as a parent, teacher, therapist or mentor. Further, each paper included in this volume highlights the continuing relevance of psychoanalysis as both treatment and form of profound human understanding.
Engaging the Self: Theory and its Applications in Psychoanalysis presents both the clinical and theoretical work of postgraduate faculty who work from a wide array of theoretical orientations. Through the lenses of both theory and clinical work, the included papers query and endeavor to illuminate the challenge of authentic engagement and bring to life those meanings and experiences that are excluded from consciousness and/or unformulated.
The editors believe that this work will inspire reflection, critical thought, and scholarly colloquy.
